Two systems, two jobs. What each is better at, and whether you need both.
BaZi (Four Pillars) and Zi Wei Dou Shu are both traditional Chinese systems, and they answer different questions. BaZi works from four pillar pairs — year, month, day, hour — and is strongest on long-range structure: what kind of life this is, what each decade is for, where the pressure sits.
Zi Wei Dou Shu works from a grid of twelve palaces with fourteen major stars placed around them. It is more granular about domains — career, marriage, wealth, health each get their own palace — and practitioners tend to use it for specific, near-term questions.
If you only pick one, pick BaZi: it needs less precision to be useful and it gives you the decade-level shape of your life. If you know your exact birth time and want detail on a specific area, a Zi Wei reading of that one palace is worth more than a second BaZi opinion.
