The two compatibility systems Chinese astrology actually uses — and why the clash is not always bad news.
Chinese astrology does not judge a match on a single pair. It uses two layers: the Six Harmonies (六合), which are six fixed pairs that simply get on, and the Three Harmonies (三合), which are four groups of three that share an element.
The Six Harmonies are Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey and Horse–Goat. These are the classic 'good match' pairs, and they are used the way Western astrology uses sun-sign compatibility.
The Three Harmonies are more interesting, because they group by element: Monkey–Rat–Dragon form the Water trine, Tiger–Horse–Dog the Fire trine, Pig–Rabbit–Goat the Wood trine, and Snake–Rooster–Ox the Metal trine. People in the same trine tend to understand each other's instincts without effort.
The clashes get a worse reputation than they deserve. The Six Clashes — Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, Snake–Pig — describe friction, not doom. In practice a clash usually means two people who pull in genuinely different directions, which is productive if both know it and corrosive if they don't.
